Early Years: 2005 to present

Jeremy Jakobs (aka JPLS) is an American minimal techno DJ and producer.  Originating from Indiana, JPLS’s first release was the Quad E.P. on Clever Music in 2005. Within a year techno don Richie Hawtin had snapped up JPLS to his acclaimed minimal focused label M_nus.  JPLS’ first release on M_nus – ‘Program’ – took the concept of minimal techno to an nth degree.  The slow and rigid clockwork percussion pattern floats on top of an occasional reverb drenched kick drum.  The result is barely dancefloor but at the same time in no danger of being confused for chill out.

Subsequent M_nus releases – such as the ‘Fuckshuffle’ E.P. (2007) and the ‘Combination’ E.P. (2008) saw JPLS move more towards a more dance floor friendly flavour of minimal.

With the support of Hawtin’s profile and label JPLS reached an increasingly international audience, with headlining gigs at Sonar in 2007 and in Ibiza.  He also played the M_nus 2006 New Years Eve showcase in Rome to a crowd 10,000 strong. After just one year on M_nus JPLS released his first album – ‘Twilite’ and in 2009 followed it up with his second – ‘The Depths’.

In 2010 he released ‘Spook Trax Vol II’ with appropriately named eerie track ‘Spooker’.  The track features atmospheric arpeggios that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Deadmau5 production.  ‘Spook Trax Vol II’ was followed later in 2010 with the sparse percussive techno of ‘Voxplosion’.

JPLS stands out from the rest of the minimal techno pack in that he isn’t afraid to push the minimalism so far that it threatens dance floor acceptance.  JPLS’s hypnotic and eerie productions are distinct within the increasingly cluttered minimal techno movement.

Jeremy Jakobs was born in Indiana and is one of the few artists signed to Richie Hawtin’s M_nus label that doesn’t live in Berlin.
