Early Years: 1998 to present

Asura started out as a group project, founded by Charles Farewell and Vincent Villuis in 1996 and joined by Christopher Maze in 1998.  The first production from the trio was ‘Mother Gaia’ in 1998, a low tempo Goa Trance track.

Two years later came Asura’s debut album ‘Code Eternity’ (Infinium Records 2000) which included the track ‘Trinity’.  ‘Trinity’ continues in the low tempo Psy-Trance vein of ‘Mother Gaia’ but incorporates much more sophisticated Ambient textures, creating a sound that owes as much to Psy-Trance as it does to Ambient.

Asura continued to hone this Psybient sound but after 2001 had to do so with a different line up, with Alex Ackerman replacing Vincent Villuis who left to focus on his own Psybient project Aes Dana.

The new line up released one album – ‘Lost Eden’ (E-FrenchSound Records 2003) before splitting up, leaving Asura as the solo project of Charles Farewell.

After a quiet couple of years Farwell released the third Asura studio album ‘Life²’ (Ultimae Records 2007) on the record label of Vincent Villuis.  The album proved to be a highpoint for Asura, featuring stand out tracks ‘Butterfly FX’ and ‘Life²’, both of which continued on Psybient path with dark downtempo Psy-Trance rhythms underpinning ethereal melodies.

In 2010 Farewll released the fourth Asura studio album ‘360’ (Ultimae Records 2010).  ‘360’ was a departure from previous Asura releases, with soft Chill Out melodies and chilled breakbeats replacing the brooding Psy-Trance rhythms of previous releases.

Despite an evolving line-up the Asura sound remained consistent throughout most of the noughties, delivering rich Ambient textures on top of downtempo, brooding Psy-Trance beats.  More recently though Asura has headed in the direction of mainstream Chill Out.

Asura’s Charles Farewell is from Lyon, France and though relatively well known on the global Psy-Trance circuit is little known in his native France.
