Sander van Doorn Sander van Doorn is a Dutch dance music producer and DJ.  Van Doorn’s style straddles trance and techno in a way that many DJs and producers claim to, but few actually do.  A highly active producer van Doorn has averaged 10 remixes and productions a year since 2004 and his popularity and DJ-ing appearances have both grown strongly in the latter part of the noughties.  Holding residencies at Cream in Ibiza and the legendary Gallery in London, Sander van Doorn’s is a career in the ascendancy.  In 2009 he was voted 10th in the DJ Magazine DJ poll. He also hosts a bi-weekly globally syndicated radio show ‘Identity’.

Sander van Doorn timeline

Sander van Doorn early yearsEarly Years: 2001-2007

Sander van Doorn started his production career in 2001 with the releases ‘Summer Melodies’ as Frequence and ‘Get Togeher’ as Sandler. Neither gave much hint of what was to com and it wasn’t three years later that van Doorn returned, with ‘Dark Roast’ in 2004. This time round, Sander van Doorn had really arrived. ‘Dark Roast’ stands head and shoulders above the 2001 releases and it is dripping with the distinct characteristics that now define van Doorn’s dark, trance tinged sound.

‘Dark Roast’ is unmistakably rooted in trance but it owes at least as much to progressive house and techno. Unlike with so much of progressive trance that tries to layer these house and techno elements onto otherwise mainstream trance sound, progressive house and techno are part of the core DNA of van Doorn’s sound.

‘Dark Roast’ not only announced Sander van Doorn’s arrival, it marked the start of a highly prolific period that has seen him produce an average of 10 productions and remixes a year between 2004 and 2010.  Also in 2004 van Doorn released his first tracks under his Sam Sharp alias, one of many that van Doorn uses to broaden the range of styles he releases. For example, later that year he released a mainstream trance track ‘Theme Song’ under his Sandler alias.  And then in 2005 he released a typically eclectic mix of productions ranging from his unashamedly commercial house bootleg remix of Police’s ‘Message In A Bottle’ as Filterfunk to the dark techno of ‘Adrenaline’ under yet another alias, Purple Haze.

By 2005 he had secured a residency at the legendary London superclub The Gallery - then at Turnmills, now at the Ministry of Sound – and the following year he had recorded an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1. As is often the case with the relatively small number of up and coming DJs that get to record an Essential Mix, it proved to be something of tipping point in his career. The same year he entered the DJ Magazine Top 100 DJ poll for the first time - at number 32 – as well as securing remixes for trance heavyweights Tiësto and Armin van Buuren. Also in 2006 he performed as resident DJ at Judge Jules’ Judgement Sundays in Ibiza, released his first mix album ‘Dance Valley Festival 2006’ and launched his biweekly radio show ‘Identity’. He followed this up in 2007 by standing in as a guest host for Eddie Halliwell’s Radio 1 show and with remixes for Wamdue Project and the Arctic Monkeys.

Sander van Doorn peak yearsPeak Years: 2008 to Present

In 2008 Sander van Doorn released his debut artist album ‘Supernaturalistic’.  As with most of the productions he releases under as Sander van Doorn, ‘Supernaturalistic’ is firmly rooted in trance but is a much darker, more tribal and less euphoric take on the genre than the big names of trance such as van Buuren and Above and Beyond.

He followed up the album release with a 32 date global tour and received the ‘Best Breakthrough Artist’ award at the Miami Winter Music Conference where his 2007 track ‘Riff’ was also nominated for the ‘Best Underground Track’ award.  2008 also saw van Doorn release ‘Organic’ the first of two productions with his friend and mentor Marco V.

If 2008 had been the year that Sander van Doorn arrived on the international scene, the following year was when he began to reap the success.  He co-mixed the 2009 Cream Ibiza album with Eddie Halliwell, recorded his 2nd Radio 1 Essential Mix [CHECK], released the single ‘Close My Eyes’ with Robbie Williams and remixed tracks for The Killers and Depeche Mode. The momentum continued in 2010 with three album releases including ‘Trance Energy 2010’ for which he also recorded the official 2010 anthem ‘Renegade’, following in the footsteps of the like of Ferry Corsten. Sander van Doorn was announced as 2010 resident DJ for Ibiza superclub Amnesia.

Sander van Doorn’s clever use of multiple aliases to release a diverse selection of styles that encompass minimal techno, progressive and trance has enabled him to be many things to many people. Thus he can headline mainstream trance events playing uplifting classics such as Café del Mar’s ‘Energy 52’ yet also be the respectable face of the progressive scene. A high prolific producer with high standards van Doorn’s profile in the dance music world looks set to grow even further.
