Early Years: 2001 to present

In 2001 Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau released their first M83 album: the album showcased an eclectic mix of electronica, Downtempo, Shoegaze and Ambient, all tied together with Pop sensibilities, as seen on the epic track ‘Skin of the Night’ (Gooom 2001). ‘Skin of the Night’ positively oozes early 1990’s Shoegaze influences such as Slowdive, Ride and Chapter House with ethereal vocals and echo laden drums and guitars.

M83’s breakthrough came two years later with the critically acclaimed album ‘Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts’ (Gooom 2003).

Fromageau left M83 after ‘Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts’ but the group continued to go from strength to strength, increasingly utilizing the assets of long term vocalist Morgan Kibby.

In 2008 M83 took a more commercial directional, incorporating a stronger Pop and 1980’s influenced sound for the album ‘Saturdays = Youth’ (Virgin 2008).  The approach proved a success, including their most successful track to date, the dreamy yet epic ‘We Own The Sky’ (Virgin 2008).

M83’s blatant disregard for traditional genre boundaries creates a sound that effortlessly combines leftfield with mainstream, innovative with accessibleall firmly anchored with an acute sense of melody.

Krzysztof Pretkiewicz was born in Poznan, Poland in 1984 and as a youngster was influenced by artists including Depeche Mode, Mike Oldfield and Jean Michel Jarre.
